UMBC Department of Information Systems at AI+Expo

Baltimore, MD — The Department of Information Systems at University of Maryland, Baltimore County will participate in the upcoming AI + Expo in Washington, D.C. this May, highlighting cutting-edge research and academic programs at the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, and human-centered computing.

At this free, public-facing event, the department will showcase the depth and impact of its interdisciplinary research while connecting with leaders from academia, industry, and government. The department is excited to engage with such an influential audience and share how its work is advancing innovation and shaping the future of intelligent systems.

Faculty and students from the department’s leading research centers and programs will be on hand to discuss their work, offering attendees insight into current projects and emerging trends in AI and information systems. Graduate students from the CARDS research center will showcase work on a Department of Defense–funded project, AI and Autonomy in Multi-Agent Systems, as well as ongoing projects supported by an MII grant focused on wearable AI technologies.

Among the featured projects is an AI-powered chatbot developed by graduate students for the myUMBC portal. Designed to improve how students access information and support services, the chatbot provides answers to common questions, connects users with campus resources, and helps streamline service delivery across the university.

The department will also highlight the work of the UMBC Ethical Software Lab, which is dedicated to pioneering research and development in the certification of software ethics. The lab’s mission is to ensure that software systems are not only functional but ethically sound, protecting user rights and privacy while promoting transparency and accountability in digital systems.

“The AI + Expo provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate how our students and faculty are addressing real-world challenges through research and innovation,” said Dr. Zhiyuan Chen, Professor and Chair, Department of Information Systems. “We are proud to showcase work that not only advances technology but also emphasizes ethical responsibility and human-centered design.”

Attendees are encouraged to visit UMBC’s exhibit to learn more about its graduate programs, connect with faculty and students, and explore opportunities for collaboration.
